Custom Assets
How to track non-standard assets like vehicles, art, collectibles, and jewelry in Forbidden Finance (Premium).
Overview
Custom assets let you include non-standard items in your net worth that do not fit into the standard categories of stocks, crypto, real estate, or retirement accounts. Vehicles, artwork, jewelry, collectibles, and any other valuable possessions can all be tracked as custom assets, giving you the most complete possible view of your financial picture.
Custom assets are available exclusively on the Premium plan.
When to Use Custom Assets
Use custom assets for valuable items that you want reflected in your net worth but that do not have automatic price tracking. Common examples include:
- Vehicles — Cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs.
- Art — Paintings, sculptures, prints, photography.
- Collectibles — Trading cards, coins, stamps, memorabilia.
- Jewelry — Watches, rings, necklaces, gemstones.
- Other valuables — Musical instruments, antiques, domain names, business equity.
If an item has a ticker symbol (stocks, ETFs) or token ID (crypto), use the corresponding asset type instead. Those categories provide automatic price updates, while custom assets require manual valuation.
How to Add a Custom Asset
Open Net Worth
Navigate to Net Worth & Assets from the main menu. Tap + or Add Asset.
Select Custom Asset
Choose Custom Asset from the asset type list.
Enter the asset name
Give it a descriptive name that helps you identify it later, such as "2023 Honda Accord" or "Banksy Print - Girl with Balloon."
Choose a category
Select from Vehicles, Art, Collectibles, Jewelry, or Other. This category is used for grouping in your portfolio allocation chart.
Set the estimated value
Enter your best estimate of the current market value. For vehicles, you might use a valuation site. For art or collectibles, use a recent appraisal or comparable sale prices.
Add notes (optional)
Include any helpful details like purchase date, purchase price, condition, or serial number. Notes are for your own reference and do not affect the valuation.
Save
Tap Save. The asset immediately appears in your net worth and portfolio allocation.
Keeping Valuations Current
Custom assets do not update automatically. Their value in your net worth reflects whatever you last entered. To keep your net worth accurate:
- Vehicles — Check a valuation resource every 3 to 6 months and update the estimated value.
- Art and collectibles — Update after a professional appraisal or when you see comparable items sell.
- Jewelry — Update annually or after any significant market shift in precious metals or gemstones.
When you update a custom asset's value, the change takes effect in the next daily snapshot. Past snapshots are not retroactively modified.

Tips
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add custom assets on the Pro plan?
No. Custom assets are a Premium-exclusive feature. On the Pro plan, you can track stocks, crypto, real estate, and retirement accounts. Upgrade to Premium to add custom assets.
What happens to my custom assets if I downgrade from Premium?
Your custom assets are preserved but frozen. They remain in your net worth at their last entered value, but you cannot add new custom assets or edit existing ones until you upgrade back to Premium.
Should I add my car as a custom asset?
If your car has meaningful value and you want an accurate net worth, yes. For older vehicles with minimal resale value, it may not be worth tracking. Use your judgment based on how much the item matters to your overall financial picture.
Can I attach photos or documents to a custom asset?
Not currently. Use the notes field to record details like appraisal dates, serial numbers, or links to documentation stored elsewhere.
