Net Worth & Assets Overview

How to track your complete financial picture in Forbidden Finance with Total, Liquid, and Investable net worth, plus assets, liabilities, and history.

Overview

Net worth tracking in Forbidden Finance gives you a single number that represents your complete financial picture: everything you own minus everything you owe. By adding your assets (bank accounts, investments, property) and liabilities (mortgages, loans, credit card debt), you get a clear, honest view of where you stand financially and how that position changes over time.

This feature is available on Pro and Premium plans. Forbidden Finance takes a daily snapshot of your net worth so you can track progress over weeks, months, and years through an interactive chart.

Forbidden Finance does not provide financial advice. These tools are for informational purposes only.

Three Views of Your Net Worth

Forbidden Finance shows your wealth in three nested views so you can answer different questions at a glance. Switch between them with the Total / Liquid / Investable toggle on the dashboard chart.

ViewWhat it answersWhat it includes
Liquid"Could I write a large check tomorrow?"Cash, checking, savings, money-market accounts. Reduced by credit-card debt.
Investable"Could I cover this in a few weeks if I had to?"Liquid plus taxable brokerage holdings (stocks, ETFs, bonds) and crypto. Reduced by student and personal loans.
Total"What's my whole financial picture?"Investable plus retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles, and custom assets. Reduced by mortgages and auto loans.

The buckets nest: Liquid ⊂ Investable ⊂ Total. Liquid is always the smallest figure, Total is always the largest, and the gap between Investable and Total represents wealth tied up in retirement accounts (penalised before age 59½), real estate, and other long-horizon assets.

For a deeper explanation of why each bucket matters and how the categorisation works, see Liquid vs. Investable Net Worth.

How Net Worth Is Calculated

The headline formula is unchanged:

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

What's new is that Forbidden Finance also computes Liquid and Investable subtotals using the same accounts and liabilities, but with different inclusion rules. Each daily snapshot stores all three figures so you can chart any of them.

  • Total Assets includes the current value of all your asset entries: bank account balances, investment holdings, real estate, retirement accounts, and any custom assets.
  • Total Liabilities includes the outstanding balance on all your debts: mortgages, auto loans, student loans, personal loans, and credit card balances.

Bank account balances from connected accounts update automatically based on your sync schedule. Investment prices for stocks and crypto update automatically from market data. Real estate and custom assets use the values you enter manually.

Every automated price is stamped with an "as of" timestamp so you can see at a glance how fresh it is. If a price is older than your plan's freshness threshold (6h Premium, 36h Pro, 72h elsewhere), the app suppresses the figure in emails and the API rather than display stale data — but the timestamp still tells you when the last known price was.

Crypto prices currently refresh every 6 hours during our beta. We expect to tighten this to hourly as our subscriber base grows and we can move to a higher data-provider tier. The "as of" timestamp on every value shows exactly how fresh each price is.

How Liabilities Reduce Each View

Different debts come due on different timelines, so they reduce different buckets of net worth:

  • Credit cards reduce Liquid — they're callable on demand and you'd cover them from cash.
  • Student loans and personal loans reduce Investable — long horizon and unsecured, but if accelerated you'd liquidate investments.
  • Mortgages and auto loans reduce Total only — they're secured by the house or car itself, not by your portfolio.

This is why your Liquid net worth can be small even when your Total is large: a typical homeowner has most of their wealth in real estate and retirement accounts, neither of which counts as Liquid.

Net Worth Dashboard

Your net worth appears on the home dashboard as a hero card showing:

  • Headline amount — Total, Liquid, or Investable depending on the toggle.
  • Other two figures — Shown as a secondary line so the full 3-tier picture is always in view.
  • Change indicator — Dollar amount and direction over the selected time range. Green up-arrow for positive, red down-arrow for negative.
  • Trend chart — Plots whichever series the toggle has selected.
  • Time range selector — 1M / 3M / 6M / 1Y / All. Available history depends on your plan.

Tap the card to open the full net worth detail screen with your complete asset and liability breakdown, allocation charts, and historical data.

Portfolio Allocation

The allocation view shows a pie chart breaking down your assets by class (stocks, crypto, real estate, retirement, cash, vehicles, other). This helps you see at a glance whether your wealth is concentrated in one area or spread across different asset types.

Daily snapshots are taken automatically. You do not need to do anything to build your history — just keep your assets and liabilities up to date. Both Liquid and Investable subtotals are stored on every snapshot, so the toggle works retroactively across your full history.

Tips

Start by adding your largest assets and liabilities first. Even a rough net worth is more useful than no net worth. You can refine the details over time.
Set a reminder to update manual valuations (like real estate) every 3 to 6 months. Automated price tracking handles stocks and crypto for you. Each property keeps a history of valuations so you can see how your estimate has changed over time.
Watch your Liquid number, not just your Total. Total grows as your house appreciates, but Liquid is what you actually have access to in an emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Liquid, Investable, and Total net worth?

Liquid is cash you could move tomorrow (checking, savings, money market) net of credit-card debt. Investable adds taxable brokerage and crypto and subtracts student/personal loans. Total adds retirement accounts, real estate, and other illiquid assets and subtracts the mortgages or auto loans against them. See Liquid vs. Investable Net Worth for the full explanation.

Why is my retirement account not in my Liquid or Investable number?

Withdrawals from 401(k), IRA, 403(b), and similar accounts before age 59½ generally trigger a 10% IRS penalty plus ordinary income tax. We don't count them as accessible wealth in your Liquid or Investable view because tapping them early is rarely a good idea. They're fully counted in your Total.

Do I need to add bank accounts separately from assets?

No. Bank accounts you have already connected or created manually in Forbidden Finance are automatically included in your net worth calculation. You only need to add non-bank assets like investments, property, and custom items.

How often does my net worth update?

A snapshot is taken daily. Investment prices update automatically throughout the day for stocks and crypto. Your net worth recalculates whenever an asset value, liability balance, or bank account balance changes.

Can I see my net worth broken down by category?

Yes. The net worth detail screen shows a breakdown by asset type and individual holdings, along with a pie chart showing your portfolio allocation. The Total / Liquid / Investable toggle on the chart lets you focus on one view at a time.

What happens to my net worth history if I downgrade from Premium to Pro?

Your history beyond 24 months is preserved but not visible until you upgrade again. No data is deleted.
