Kakeibo Budget

How to use the Kakeibo budget method in Forbidden Finance, a Japanese mindful budgeting approach with weekly tracking and monthly reflection.

Overview

Kakeibo (pronounced "kah-keh-boh") is a Japanese budgeting method rooted in mindful spending. Created over a century ago, it combines four simple spending categories with weekly check-ins and monthly reflection to help you become more intentional about where your money goes. This method is available on Starter tier and above.

The philosophy behind Kakeibo is awareness. Instead of just tracking numbers, you regularly ask yourself whether your spending aligns with what you actually value. The built-in reflection prompts help you develop a deeper understanding of your relationship with money over time.

The Four Groups

Kakeibo uses four fixed spending groups:

GroupWhat It CoversExamples
NeedsEssential expenses you cannot avoidRent, groceries, utilities, insurance, transportation
WantsDiscretionary spending for enjoymentDining out, entertainment, hobbies, subscriptions
CultureSpending on personal growth and enrichmentBooks, courses, museum visits, concerts, travel experiences
ExtraUnexpected or irregular expensesGifts, repairs, medical copays, one-time purchases

The Culture group is unique to Kakeibo and distinguishes it from other methods. By separating cultural enrichment from general wants, Kakeibo encourages you to invest in experiences and learning.

How to Set Up Kakeibo

Open the Budget Wizard

Navigate to Budget and tap Create Budget. Select Kakeibo from the method list.

Enter your monthly income

Enter your total monthly take-home pay.

Allocate to each group

Assign a dollar amount or percentage to Needs, Wants, Culture, and Extra. Kakeibo traditionally emphasizes keeping Wants and Culture balanced.

Set your weekly allowance

Enter a weekly cap for discretionary spending (Wants + Culture). This helps pace your spending throughout the month instead of front-loading it.

Choose your reflection day

Pick the day of the month when you want to be prompted for your monthly reflection. The last day of the month is the traditional choice.

Activate your budget

Review and tap Activate.

Weekly Tracking

Kakeibo divides each month into weekly periods. For each week, you see:

  • Weekly allowance remaining -- how much discretionary money is left for this week
  • Weekly spending breakdown -- spending in each of the four groups
  • Week-over-week comparison -- whether spending is trending up or down

The weekly view helps you pace yourself. If you overspend in week one, you see exactly how much less you have for the remaining weeks, making the impact of each purchase tangible.

Monthly Reflection

At the end of each month (on your chosen reflection day), Forbidden Finance prompts you with reflection questions:

  • What did I spend on that I did not need?
  • What would I change about this month's spending?
  • What am I saving for?

Your responses are saved in the Reflection Journal feature, building a personal record of your financial mindfulness over time. You can review past reflections to see how your habits and priorities evolve.

Example Setup

Monthly income: $4,200. Weekly allowance for discretionary spending: $300.

GroupAllocated
Needs$2,200
Wants$800
Culture$400
Extra$300
Savings$500

Week 1: You spend $220 of your $300 weekly allowance, leaving $80 unused. Week 2: You spend $340, exceeding the weekly cap by $40. The app flags the overage and shows you that weeks 3 and 4 need to average $270 each to stay on track for the month.

Tips

Take the reflection prompts seriously. The real value of Kakeibo comes from the mindfulness practice, not just the numbers. Spend a few quiet minutes with each monthly reflection.
Use the Culture group intentionally. It is easy to let this become a catch-all for entertainment. Reserve it for spending that genuinely enriches your life -- books, classes, meaningful experiences.
The weekly allowance is a guide, not a hard lock. Forbidden Finance flags overages but does not prevent transactions. The goal is awareness, not restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I customize the four group names?

No. The four groups (Needs, Wants, Culture, Extra) are fixed in Kakeibo to preserve the method's philosophy. If you want fully custom groups, use the Custom budget method.

Where do I find my past reflections?

Your reflection responses are saved in the Reflection Journal, accessible from the Features section of the app. You can browse reflections by month.

Is the weekly allowance shared across Wants and Culture?

Yes. The weekly allowance caps your combined discretionary spending across Wants and Culture. Needs and Extra are tracked monthly, not weekly.

Can I change my reflection day?

Yes. Go to your budget settings and update the reflection day at any time. You can also trigger a reflection manually whenever you want.
