Net Worth History

How Forbidden Finance tracks your net worth over time with daily snapshots and interactive charts.

Overview

Forbidden Finance takes a daily snapshot of your net worth so you can see exactly how your financial position has changed over time. The net worth history chart turns an abstract number into a visible trend, making it easy to spot progress, identify setbacks, and stay motivated on your financial journey.

This feature is available on Pro and Premium plans. Pro users have access to 24 months of history, while Premium users have unlimited history.

How Snapshots Work

Every day, Forbidden Finance calculates your net worth by summing all assets and subtracting all liabilities. Each snapshot stores three figures — Total, Liquid, and Investable — so the chart's series toggle works retroactively across your full history. The calculation includes:

  • Bank account balances — From connected accounts (synced automatically) and manual accounts (last entered balance).
  • Investment values — Stocks, ETFs, bonds, and crypto at their latest market prices.
  • Real estate and custom assets — At their most recently entered estimated values, drawn from the property's valuation history at that date.
  • Liability balances — From connected loan/credit accounts (synced) and manually entered debts. Each debt reduces Liquid, Investable, or Total according to its type — see Add Liabilities for the rules.

The snapshot captures the state of all these values at that point in time. Even if you later edit an asset or liability, past snapshots remain unchanged, giving you an accurate historical record.

Historical accuracy

Historical snapshots use the holding prices, account balances, and property valuations that were in effect on each historical date — not today's values. If a stock was worth $50 on a past date and is worth $80 today, the snapshot for that date uses $50. The same applies to your manually entered property valuations: each one is timestamped, and the snapshot pulls the most recent valuation as of that date.

Reading the Chart

The history chart shows a line graph of your net worth over time. Key visual elements include:

  • Series toggle — Choose Total, Liquid, or Investable. The chart re-plots, the headline amount changes to that series, and the change indicator recalculates over your selected time range. The other two figures are always visible as a small secondary line below the headline so you don't lose sight of the full picture.
  • Y-axis baseline — When all values in your selected range are positive, the chart anchors the bottom of the Y-axis at zero with a small headroom on top. A 3% wiggle in a $500K net worth then looks like a 3% wiggle, not a vertical drop. When your range includes negative values, the chart pads both ends of the axis and keeps the zero line visible as a reference.
  • Change indicator — Dollar amount over your selected time range, with a directional arrow and color: green up-arrow for positive, red down-arrow for negative. The change is recalculated against whichever series you have toggled.
  • High and low markers — The highest and lowest points within the selected range are highlighted so you can see your peaks and valleys.

What Causes Changes

Your net worth changes for several reasons, and the history chart reflects all of them:

  • Income and expenses — Regular cash flow changes your bank balances.
  • Market movements — Stock and crypto prices fluctuate, changing the value of your investments.
  • Debt payments — As you pay down loans and credit cards, your liabilities decrease.
  • Manual updates — When you update a property value, custom asset estimate, or manual account balance.
  • New assets or liabilities — Adding or removing entries shifts your total.

If you downgrade from Premium to Pro, history beyond 24 months is preserved but hidden. Upgrading again restores access to your full history.

Tips

Check your net worth history monthly rather than daily. Day-to-day fluctuations (especially from stock and crypto prices) can be distracting. The monthly view shows the real trend.
Major life events like buying a home, paying off a student loan, or starting a new job create visible inflection points in your chart. These are milestones worth celebrating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit a past snapshot?

No. Snapshots are historical records and cannot be modified after the fact. This ensures your history is an accurate timeline of your finances as they were on each date.

Why did my net worth change even though I did not add or remove anything?

Automatic price updates for stocks and cryptocurrency can change your asset values between snapshots. Bank balance syncs also update automatically. These changes are reflected in the next day's snapshot.

What if I forget to update a manual asset for several months?

Your snapshots during that period reflect the last known value. Once you update the value, future snapshots use the new number. The historical snapshots remain as they were, so there may be a visible jump when you update.

Is there a way to export my net worth history?

You can export your financial data, including net worth history, from the data export feature in Settings. Choose JSON format for the most complete data or CSV for spreadsheet use. The export includes Total, Liquid, and Investable figures for every snapshot.

Why does my Liquid line have a different starting date than my Total line?

Liquid and Investable figures are stored on every snapshot from the day the feature was introduced. For accounts that were connected before that date, the older snapshots may not have Liquid or Investable values yet — the chart skips those points rather than plot zeros, which is why the line starts later. Once a snapshot has all three values, all three views chart side-by-side.
