Remove a Bank Connection
How to disconnect a bank account from Forbidden Finance, what happens to your existing transactions, and the confirmation process.
Overview
You can remove a bank connection at any time if you no longer want Forbidden Finance to sync with that bank. Removing a connection stops all future syncing and revokes access to your bank data. Your existing transactions are preserved -- they remain in your transaction history and continue to count in your budgets and reports. The account simply becomes a read-only record of your past activity.
How to Remove a Connection
Go to Accounts
Open the Accounts tab from the bottom navigation bar.
Select the connected account
Tap the bank-synced account you want to disconnect. This opens the account detail screen.
Open connection settings
Scroll down to the Connection section and tap Manage Connection or the settings icon next to the bank name.
Tap Remove Connection
Tap Remove Connection. A confirmation dialog appears explaining what will happen.
Confirm removal
Review the confirmation message and tap Remove to proceed. The connection is revoked immediately.
What Happens After Removal
Transactions are preserved
All previously synced transactions remain in your transaction history. They continue to appear in your transaction list, budget calculations, reports, and spending trends. Nothing is deleted.
Syncing stops
No new transactions are imported from this bank. The account balance freezes at the last synced value. If you make purchases after disconnecting, they do not appear in Forbidden Finance unless you enter them manually.
The account becomes inactive
The disconnected account is marked as inactive in your accounts list. You can still view its history but cannot add new bank-synced transactions to it. You can manually enter transactions if you want to continue tracking the account without a connection.
Recurring rules are preserved
Any recurring transaction rules that were detected from this account's history remain active. If the account is no longer syncing, upcoming occurrences will eventually be marked as missed since no matching transactions arrive.
Connection limit is freed up
Removing a connection frees up one slot toward your tier's connection limit. If you had 2 of 2 connections on Starter and remove one, you can connect a different bank.
Key Details
- Removal is immediate. Once you confirm, the connection is revoked and cannot be undone. To reconnect to the same bank, you need to go through the full connection flow again.
- All accounts at that bank are affected. A single bank connection may include multiple accounts (checking, savings, credit card). Removing the connection disconnects all accounts linked to it.
- Your bank is notified. Plaid revokes the access token, so the bank knows that Forbidden Finance no longer has access to your data.
- No data is sent to your bank. Removal only revokes Forbidden Finance's ability to read your data. Your bank does not receive any of your Forbidden Finance data.
Tips
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my existing transactions be deleted?
No. All previously synced transactions are permanently preserved. They remain in your history, budgets, and reports. Only future syncing is stopped.
Can I reconnect to the same bank later?
Yes. You can go through the bank connection flow again at any time (as long as you have an available connection slot on your tier). It is treated as a new connection with a fresh initial sync.
What if I want to remove just one account but keep others at the same bank?
Bank connections are at the institution level, not the individual account level. You cannot selectively disconnect one account while keeping others from the same bank. However, you can hide specific accounts from your dashboard if you do not want to see them.
Does removing a connection affect my tier or billing?
No. Removing a connection does not change your subscription tier or billing. It simply frees up one connection slot that you can use for a different bank if you choose.
Will my bank know I disconnected?
Your bank is notified that the access token has been revoked. This is standard practice for data-sharing connections and does not affect your bank account in any way.
