Hidden Accounts & Duplicates

Hide an account to keep it out of budgets, analytics, transaction lists, and net worth going forward while sync keeps running — and use the overlap advisor to resolve duplicate copies when the same institution is connected on two rails.

Overview

Sometimes you want an account to keep syncing but stop cluttering your budgets and net worth — an old account you are winding down, a shared account you track but don't budget against, or a duplicate copy of an account you connected on two different rails. Hiding an account does exactly that: it stays connected and current, but it steps out of the way.

What Hiding Does

When you hide an account, it is excluded going forward from:

  • Budgets — its transactions no longer count against any budget category.
  • Analytics — it drops out of spending reports, trends, and insights.
  • Transaction lists — its transactions no longer appear in your main transaction feed.
  • Net worth — its balance no longer counts toward your net worth total.

Meanwhile, sync keeps running. The account stays connected, balances and transactions keep updating in the background, and you can unhide it at any time to bring it back into view with its data intact.

Hiding changes things going forward only. Your existing history and past net-worth snapshots are not rewritten — a hidden account's earlier contribution to a snapshot stays in that snapshot. Hiding is not the same as deleting or disconnecting: nothing is removed, and sync continues.

How to Hide an Account

Open the account

Go to the Accounts tab and tap the account you want to hide.

Choose Hide

On the account detail screen, choose Hide account. Confirm when prompted.

Verify it stepped out of view

The account moves to a Hidden section. Its transactions leave your feed, and your budgets and net worth recalculate without it from now on.

To bring it back, open the Hidden section, select the account, and choose Unhide. It rejoins your budgets, analytics, lists, and net worth going forward.

The Overlap Advisor

Because Forbidden Finance has more than one connection rail, the same institution can end up connected twice — for example, a firm connected on the standard Bank & Account Connections rail and on the Brokerages & Investments rail, each reporting an overlapping account. Counting both would double your balances.

The overlap advisor watches for this. When it detects that two connected copies describe the same underlying account, it suggests hiding the duplicate and keeping the richer copy — the one with more detail, such as the brokerage connection that carries holdings and cost basis rather than a plain cash balance.

Open the overlap suggestion

When an overlap is detected, you see an advisory on the account or on your dashboard. Tap it to review.

Review which copy is richer

The advisor shows both copies and marks the one it recommends keeping — usually the connection with holdings, cost basis, or more complete activity.

Hide the duplicate

Accept the suggestion to hide the thinner copy. Your net worth and budgets stop double-counting immediately. You can always unhide it later.

The advisor only ever suggests — it never disconnects anything on its own. If you prefer to keep both copies visible, dismiss the suggestion and both stay active.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hiding an account delete its data?

No. Hiding preserves everything and keeps sync running. The account simply stops counting toward budgets, analytics, lists, and net worth from now on. Unhide it anytime to restore it to view.

Will hiding an account change my past net worth?

No. Past snapshots are not rewritten. Hiding affects your net worth going forward; historical snapshots keep the values they had when they were taken.

Why is the same account showing up twice?

The same institution can be connected on more than one rail — for example, the bank rail and the brokerage rail. The overlap advisor detects this and suggests hiding the duplicate so balances are not double-counted.

Which copy should I keep when there is an overlap?

Keep the richer copy — typically the brokerage connection, which carries holdings and cost basis, over a plain cash-balance copy. The advisor marks its recommendation for you.

Does a hidden account still count against my connection slots?

Yes. Hiding is a display choice, not a disconnect. The account stays connected and continues to occupy its connection slot. To free the slot, remove the connection instead.

Connect a Brokerage

Direct brokerage connections that may overlap the bank rail.

Remove a Connection

Stop syncing an account entirely.
