Privacy Mode
How to use privacy mode in Forbidden Finance to hide monetary amounts on your dashboard and protect against shoulder surfing.
Overview
Privacy mode hides all monetary amounts in the Forbidden Finance app behind a blur. When you are in a public place, on a train, or anywhere someone might glance at your screen, privacy mode ensures your balances, transaction amounts, budget progress, and net worth are not visible. You can peek at individual cards by tapping them without revealing everything else.
Privacy mode is a single-tap feature that works instantly across the entire app. It is designed for situations where you want to quickly check something in the app without exposing your full financial picture.
How to Use Privacy Mode
Activate privacy mode
Tap the eye icon in the app bar at the top of the dashboard. All monetary amounts throughout the app are immediately hidden behind a blur effect.
Peek at specific information
While privacy mode is active, tap any card, widget, or transaction row to temporarily reveal its amounts. Only the item you tap becomes visible -- everything else remains blurred.
Deactivate privacy mode
Tap the eye icon again to reveal all amounts across the app.
What Privacy Mode Hides
| Hidden | Still Visible |
|---|---|
| Account balances | Account names |
| Transaction amounts | Transaction merchants and categories |
| Budget remaining/spent amounts | Budget category names and progress bar percentages |
| Net worth total and changes | Net worth trend direction (up/down) |
| Goal progress amounts | Goal names and completion percentage |
| Bill amounts | Bill names and due dates |
When to Use Privacy Mode
Privacy mode is useful whenever you open the app around other people:
- Commuting on public transportation
- At work when colleagues are nearby
- In a cafe or shared workspace
- During a meeting when you need to quickly check a bill due date
- With friends or family who you do not want seeing your balances
Tips
Frequently Asked Questions
Does privacy mode hide data on all screens, or just the dashboard?
Privacy mode hides monetary amounts across the entire app, including the dashboard, transaction list, account details, budget screens, goals, and net worth views. It is a global toggle.
Can someone still see my data if they take a screenshot?
On mobile devices (iOS and Android), Forbidden Finance automatically blocks screenshots and screen recording. Screenshots appear blank. This protection works independently of privacy mode and is always active.
Can I leave privacy mode on by default?
Privacy mode resets each time you open the app. This is intentional -- always-on privacy mode would defeat its purpose since you might forget amounts are hidden and miss important information. The one-tap toggle makes it easy to activate whenever you need it.
Does privacy mode affect my partner's view in household sharing?
No. Privacy mode is local to your device and your current session. It does not affect how household members see shared data on their own devices.
Is there a widget-level privacy setting?
Not as a persistent setting, but the tap-to-peek feature works at the widget level. You can selectively reveal individual widgets while keeping everything else blurred. This gives you widget-level control during each session.
