Notification Settings

How to configure notification preferences in Forbidden Finance, including bill reminders, budget alerts, goal milestones, quiet hours, and delivery channels.

Overview

Forbidden Finance sends notifications to keep you informed about important financial events: upcoming bills, budget milestones, goal progress, and more. You have full control over which notifications you receive, how they are delivered (push or email), and when they are allowed to reach you. Configure everything from the notification settings screen.

Notification Types

Forbidden Finance supports several categories of notifications, each of which can be independently enabled or disabled:

Notification TypeWhat It Does
Bill remindersAlerts you 3 days before a recurring bill is due.
Missed payment alertsNotifies you when a recurring charge does not arrive by its expected date.
Budget alertsWarns you when spending approaches or exceeds your budget allocation (e.g., 80%, 100%).
Goal milestonesCelebrates when you hit a savings goal milestone (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%).
Sync alertsNotifies you of bank connection issues or sync failures.
Household activityAlerts you when a household member takes action on shared data.
Account securityNotifies you of new logins, password changes, and other security events. Always on for your protection.

How to Configure Notifications

Open Settings

Tap the Settings icon in the navigation bar.

Select Notifications

Tap Notifications to view all notification categories.

Toggle individual types

Each notification type has its own on/off switch. Turn on the ones you want and turn off the ones you do not.

Choose delivery channels

For each enabled notification type, choose whether to receive it as a push notification, an email, or both.

Save

Your preferences are saved automatically as you make changes.

Delivery Channels

  • Push notifications — Appear on your device's lock screen and notification center. Requires the Forbidden Finance app to be installed and push notifications enabled in your device settings.
  • Email notifications — Sent to the email address on your profile. Useful for notifications you want to review later or when you do not have the app nearby.

You can use both channels for important notifications (like missed payments) and only push for less urgent ones (like goal milestones).

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours suppress push notifications during times when you do not want to be disturbed, such as overnight or during work hours.

Enable Quiet Hours

Go to Settings > Notifications > Quiet Hours and toggle it on.

Set the time range

Choose a start time and end time (e.g., 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM). Push notifications are held during this window.

Review held notifications

Notifications generated during quiet hours are delivered silently when the quiet period ends. Nothing is lost.

Email notifications are not affected by quiet hours. They are delivered according to their normal schedule regardless of your quiet hours setting.

Tips

At minimum, keep bill reminders and missed payment alerts turned on. These are the most actionable notifications and help you avoid late fees.
If you find budget alerts too frequent, adjust your budget alert threshold (e.g., only alert at 100% instead of 80%) rather than turning off budget notifications entirely.
Account security notifications cannot be disabled. These alerts protect your account by notifying you of login activity and security changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I not receiving push notifications?

Check that push notifications are enabled for Forbidden Finance in your device's system settings (iOS: Settings > Notifications, Android: Settings > Apps). Also verify that the specific notification type is enabled within the app's notification settings.

Can I snooze a notification?

Notification snoozing is handled by your device's operating system, not Forbidden Finance. On most devices, you can swipe a notification to snooze it for a set period.

Do quiet hours apply to email notifications?

No. Quiet hours only affect push notifications. Emails are sent on their normal schedule. If you want to reduce email volume, adjust individual notification types to push-only.

Can I set different notification preferences for each household member?

Yes. Each household member manages their own notification preferences independently from their own account settings.
